Hospital!

The one thing about Diabetes that freaks us out and worries us the most is when she gets sick. Specifically the flu. So far she has done really well over her whole life had only thrown up 4 times. Two times once when we were flying from Utah to New York, that was a treat and totally terrifying since I had no way to get help if I needed and then again this time which was fast and only two times.

We have been lucky but our luck finally ran out. Last Monday when we were putting Kai to bed she kept saying that her tummy hurt which normally means she needs to go to the bathroom so she did and then needed to go again. Then an hour after going to bed she woke up crying saying her tummy hurt and I just had a feeling this was the start of something bad. So I brought her downstairs and turned on a movie for her. Laid towells down all over and got her a bowl just in case. Every few minutes she would cry and say that her tummy hurt so I knew it was the flu and that it was going to be a long night. She threw up about five times that night and finally fell asleep on the couch next to me at like 5 a.m. When she woke up at 10 she was bright eyes and ready to eat and play. She felt completely fine so I was thrilled that this was just a short flu again. All that day she was fine, she ate a ton, went to swim lessons, and Jared took her to young men's because they were swimming at a pool that she loves. I have heard from everyone that she was the crazy one of the whole bunch that night jumping and doing things that some of the YM and YW were scared to do.

She wanted to eat a ton after she got some IV fluids in her. She hasn't really eaten anything since then.
She went to bed okay and then an hour later she starts crying and we go up there and she had thrown up all over her bed.  So we brought her down again and she proceeded to throw-up about 10 times through out the night! In the morning her ketones were really high and the only way to bring them down is to drink a lot of water and get an insulin shot. Well, she didn't want to eat or drink anything and I couldn't give her a shot because her blood sugars were barely in the 100's. It was like 6 in the morning and her ketones were 2.1 which is really bad. So I tried to call Jared like 10 times and paged him over and over. No response.
So I called Karen the Diabetes specialist who was not in the office yet. Left her message. Called the pager for the on-call endocrine doc. Then just waited for someone to call me back. Finally like an hour later Jared called back, he had been swimming so he didn't see the call. He told me to bring her in to the ER. The endocrin called as well and said the same thing. Thank goodness the Endocrine on call was a reservest Dr. Straight who is way nice and soooo much better than Kai's normal endocrin who we both dislike. I dropped McKean off at the Keck's house thankfully and took Kai in. She got right back and they put in an IV which she didn't even flinch on. The nurse was shocked and kept saying I have never seen a kid that did so good with an IV. Of course she hated it once it was in and kept crying about it. The location definitely was not the best for a kid. Anyways, she was doing better and the gave her a bunch of fluids and then she got really hungry and wanted to eat. She ended up eating a ton of food. They kept her for awhile to make sure she was going to hold down the food and then we headed home. Of course she threw-up when we got home and Jared ended up taking her back in that evening. They admitted her into the peds ward and Jared spent the night with her. She did pretty good that night and did not throw up more than once or twice.
Her ketones were still pretty high.
I came early the next morning and the three of us just hung out all day!! Kai didn't feel great yet so she mostly stayed in bed the whole time and didn't want to eat anything or drink. McKean was getting very antsy and bored there. I didn't bring him that many toys. It was mostly really boring. Kai just wanted to watch the Tinkerbell movie over and over again.

She is smiling here but that was really rare. She would not look at or speak to or smile for any of the doctors or nurses which is really odd for Kai.
Jared was in the O.R. all day but would come down and check on us.
Poor McKean had to take his naps in his car seat in the bathtub. Just so we could block out as much noise as possible for the kid. He didn't like it very much and now cries every time I put him in his seat.
She was still not feeling great, not eating and had High ketones Thrusday night so she again stayed the night and poor Jared stayed with her. I would have if I would have been better prepared and brought a pump so Jared could take McKean home. It was really strange for me to be home and to go to bed without Kailie here. I have never been home when she is not and that was strange and did not feel right.
That night was not so good, Kai was up most of the night and they were both exhausted when I got there in the morning.  Thankfully Jared didn't really have to work too much on Friday and he was able to go home for a few hours.
I was on a mission to get Kai to eat at least something so I took her out and let her pick anything she wanted from the two different cafeteria's. She picked all this food and then wouldn't eat any of it except some baby food pears and a banana which she then proceeded to throw-up all over.  Any time she ate she would complain that her tummy hurt but then she would grab her throat. I am sure her throat was just so raw from all the acid in the throw-up.
Poor Kiddo!
Even though she threw-up she was feeling so much better and just wanted to get out and play. She pushed McKean all over the ward while I walked behind bringing her IV and played in the toy room.

They both rode in the the wagon to get food and then McKean used it as a play area.

On our way to get some dinner.
Yes, she doesn't have any shoes.
In the rush to get there we forgot to bring her some.
She pushed her little car all down the hallway.

And had to push the elevator buttons. I just really felt it was time for her to come home. She was off the IV and even though she wasn't eating a ton she was at least eating. Her ketones were down and her blood sugar was back down. I personally hate hospitals and feel as though it is hard to truly get better in a hospital because A) you get no sleep since they are constantly checking and poking and prodding you and B) you just heal better in a comfortable environment where you have your normal foods and comforts. I left Friday evening around 8 pm since McKean was freaking out and refused to fall asleep in his carseat and thought for sure since it was already so late that she would be spending the night again. But Jared was able to work his magic and got her released. It took them awhile to get everything done and they didn't get home till after 11pm but it was the best feeling in the world to have Kai back home. She slept really well, her ketones did go up that night but we were able to bring them back down and each day she is getting back to her normal happy self and is even eating more food  finally.

This was a horrible flu and it seems to be going around. I just hope this sort of thing is rare for us. Now people might understand why I am super crazy about her not being around other sick kids. The only good thing to come out of this was that we really like the endocrine doctor that we met and are going to look into switching to her even though she is at a civilian practice.

The night we took photos out in the wildflowers we came back and were sitting on the couch skyping with  Jared's parents and we found a little green caterpillar crawling on Kean. Jared took it off and set it on the couch and then a few minutes later it was gone. Later that night Kai was eating her bedtime snack of Grapefruit her new favorite thing and baby food. She kept asking about a brown pillow or something. I could not figure out what she meant and she was getting frustrated that I couldn't understand.

Finally, I realized she was talking about the caterpillar or badepillwow. I just love her cute little voice right now so I thought I would share.

On the Verge!

This little dude is right on the verge of crawling. This just might be my last few days of enjoying my easy sweet baby that just sits there and plays and smiles and poops all day long..

Here's to the days of constantly picking up everything little on the floors, babygates, and baby proof cabinets. I just know this kid is going to cause a lot of mischief around these parts!
I can see it in his eyes and boy oh boy is he ready to move!!!

Happy Daddy's Day

Today was a great day and I think Jared had a nice Father's day! He got to watch golf, which A) Who knew that he even liked golf and B) usually I give him a hard time about watching TV on Sunday because I don't like to but today I just let him watch to his hearts content. He played a bunch with the kiddos. Chasing Kailie around, pushing her on the swing. Tossing Keaner's around a bit. I thought about making him a nice breakfast but with 8:30 church I knew it wasn't going to happen, but we did have a really great dinner with the Kecks which made up for it.

Daddy the Doctor  fixing Kailie's hurt toe with a Bambaid.. The other day a friend came over to have Jared look at her baby who was sick. Kai says to me "is Daddy a Doctor?" I was like yep and kind of surprised that she is just now getting that.

Kai was so excited to open up Jared's presents. She told him before hand that there was candy and that she made him a shirt so most of his gifts weren't much of a surprise. First up a  candy poster. That I think Kean and Kai were more excited about than Daddy!
Then came the real gift which Kai helped me wrap. A shirt with their hand prints on that we will add new ones each father's day. Kai loved making this shirt and was so excited to give it to him. His real present which was finally a real surprise to him was a Garmin GPS and Heart rate monitor watch for triathlons. He was pretty surprised even though he has mentioned that he wants one. Hopefully it gets some good use!

Like Father Like daughter and like Father like Son.
This picture is not planned they just all happened to have their mouths open the same way!!
And it wouldn't be a complete father's day or Sunday with out a nap!!
We are so happy to Have Jared or Daddy in our lives. He is a great father and husband and we all love when he is home. We are so grateful for all of his hard work and that he provides a nice life for us. I love (most of the time) being home with my kids and especially love being my own boss and going on vacations when ever I feel like with out worrying about getting time off. Thanks Daddy for all your hard work. We sure appreciate it!
We love you Daddy!

Here is Kai performing one of the songs she sung today in church. Jared was out of town all last week so we have been secretly working on it. She is giving the thumbs up before she starts cause the primary chorister told her too.
It was funny! She was cute. I love her little voice, basically I just love everything about her!!
Happy Father's day to all the Father's out there especially to my dad. You have always been there for me and that means a lot. You are a great dad!!

Happy Father's Day!

Losing My Mind!

Some days I swear I am losing my mind! Like take today for example or actually lets start with last night. I get a drink of almond milk and as I pour some I recognize that the carton is mostly full, so I think I don't need to get a new one when I go to the store. This morning, I wake up and go to grab some more Milk and the carton is not in the fridge. So I think back, did I drink it all last night? No it was almost full, Huh? So where is the milk? Then the search begins, the pantry-no, the garbage-no, the cupboards-ah-ha the glass cupboard. Great!! Nice one Gina!!

Then today, I leave the gym after a pretty tough workout and we have some time before the swim playgroup starts so I decide to "quickly" stop by Ross and look for some luggage since we are need of some new ones. I decide to just grab my wallet and not my purse or cell phone since this will be "quick". I have my keys and McKean but then Kai needs help putting her shoes on, which is so annoying that she takes them off every time we get in the car. Anyways, so I put down McKean and I put my keys in her car seat which is in the car, then reach down to help her. As I close the door which I had already locked I realized that my keys were inside still and so was my cell phone. Total Bummer.
And this is the part of the story where not having to memorize phone numbers anymore becomes a really bad thing. Thankfully, I know Jared's of course, so I go inside Ross and ask a nice lady if I can borrow her phone all the while just praying that Jared will answer. Did I mention that he is out of town right now Moonlighting so I have no clue his schedule and he could have been in the O.R. for all I knew. Thankfully he answered and I was like "Um can you call Andrea and ask her to go get the spare keys from our house and drive them out to me.
Thankfully she was available and made it out quick.

Then as we were hanging out in the store I was browsing through some clothes racks and Kai was pushing Kean in the cart. I look up and they are gone, Don't see the cart at all and at the same time a lady finds some credit cards on the floor and asks if they are mine. Sure enough they were which meant Kean had gotten into my wallet that I had placed in his car seat and was losing cards all over the store not to mention the fact that I had no clue where my two kids were. I was like yelling Kai's name in the store and she did not respond but a few shoppers said  they are over  by the toys. Little stinker had gone really far in like two seconds. Then we had to back track and try to find all of my cards.
Wow, what a day and it wasn't even 11 am yet!!

I had no food for Kai or no glucometer to check her seeing as they were both in my purse.
 Lesson learned.
Don't leave cell phone or purse and most importantly keys in the car oh and Memorize Andrea's number!
I know how you feel little buddy!!

Primary Talks

Kai had to give her first primary talk a couple of weeks ago. I was a little stressed and worried since I have never had to prepare a primary talk before and wasn't sure what to do and mostly because I got the email informing me of the talk late Friday night so that was kind of annoying. Anyways, I just found a quick little talk off of the Internet and then changed a few parts and walla we have a sunbeam talk. I practiced with Kai like 10 times prior to actually doing it and she did pretty good. She didn't get shy which was great she just doesn't talk that clear yet!!

She was so cute I just had to share and since it is hard to understand this is what she said:

I Can Choose the Right By being Baptized.
Jesus Christ was Baptized
And I Kailie will be Baptized too.
I will follow his example.
And do what he wants me to do.

Cap Tex Triathlon in Austin

On Memorial Day Jared, Justin and Chad did an Olympic Triathlon which is a 1 mile swim, 25 mile bike and 6 1/2 mile run. They have been training in the mornings together for the past few months so this was pretty exciting for them. We drove up to Austin Sunday afternoon and the race was bright and early Monday morning. Jared took 2 ambien the night before which was probably a good thing because sleeping in a tiny room with two kiddos doesn't mean much sleep. McKean's crib was rock solid and he woke up at 1 am just screaming. I got to him pretty fast and nursed him since I didn't want to keep Jared awake. When I went to put him back in his crib he starting screaming again. The poor kid did not want to go back in that hard bed so I laid him down with us and he fell instantly asleep. When Jared woke up he didn't even know McKean was there nor did he here him cry but he picked him up to put him back in the crib and again Kean starting screaming. So funny. He was not going back in that thing.
The guys took off for the race around 6am and we slept in a little longer and headed over around 7:30. We missed them starting but got there just in time to see them come out of the water. Chad was the first one out which was a surprise because Jared is faster in the water but I guess he didn't have a great swim and got caught on the outside. They swam about 1 mile and all did great. I was jealous because the lake/river they swam in looked soooo refreshing,  I wanted to jump in.
We camped out at the beginning/end of the running part so we had to wait quite awhile while they biked their 25 miles. We kept the girls entertained by coloring posters for their dad's and riding their scooters up and down the sidewalk.
These two weren't quite as easy to entertain and McKean got his first big boo-bo.
I had his car seat sitting on the sidewalk and when they came by running I sat him down in it. Somehow he was able to flip himself out right on to the concrete,  poor kid and got this big bruise/scab on his forehead. Poor little guy, he has never done that before or since and I am still not sure how he did it.

Kai holding up her sign for her daddy as he comes up!
Justin coming by! Justin did not have his best race.
Probably hanging out at the beach the day before all day in the sun was not the best thing!
Chad cruising along.
He was so fast I didn't have time to get a photo of him by us!!
Jared in the middle of his 6 mile run.
The girls got rainbows painted on their arms.
Jared crossing the finish line. He felt pretty good when he finished and was 3 minutes slower than his goal which he was bummed about because he knew he couldn't have pushed himself harder.I think his time was 2:43,  All in all they had fun and are already planning their next one. We were super proud of him and happy that he had a good race. He has been a lot happier since he started training for this so I guess since he can't surf,  swimming, biking and running will have to suffice!

I am bummed I didn't get a photo of all them together but Kailie was driving me crazy. That whole week before she was being mean at the gym and kept getting in trouble and then that weekend at the beach she was mean a few times but this morning at the race she was especially on one and kept pushing the other girls. I took away her scooter and wouldn't let her ride it anymore and yet she just continued to be mean so right before Jared came to meet us she was hitting and I just lost it with her. I was so mad so mad so mad and just done with her. It had been a long week so when Jared showed up even though he had just finished a big race I just threw her to him and was like I am done. I need some time. Haha! I just had had it with her. So needless to say my mind was not on the race or getting a photo with all of them.
She has been much better since then. We have talks everyday on the drive to the gym and basically this is the deal. If she is mean and hurts other kids than we take away her bike, scooter, toys, etc. She gets to go to timeout and gets a big spanking from dad when he gets home. If she is good than she gets a toy back and gets a sticker on her sticker chart. I honestly don't thinks she is mean just to be mean. Sometimes other kids hurt her and instead of crying because she never cries she just hurts them back. Which of course is wrong but then she gets in trouble and the other kid doesn't. So we have been teaching her to tell the "mother" when she gets hurt. Other times when I have asked her why she hurt someone she says "I just want to play with them" So I have been working on her to use her words and instead of kicking said person instead tell them her name and ask them if they want to play! She seems to be doing this and is doing so much better in the mean department which is so so nice!!
Back to the race: I think Andrea and I had a harder time getting to the finish line than the guys!! There was  a big bridge with lots of people and we had two strollers, two babies and 3 squirts to somehow get over. Thankfully a really awesome couple just stepped up and offered to help us.  Going back over it after the race was a different story, this time we had Justin and Jared there to help us. I handed Kai her scooter and told her to carry it over the bridge. The Keck's went over before us and as we started to go, I looked around for Kai and couldn't see her so I just figured she went over with the Keck's since she is normally right with Brinley and Savannah. Well, we get over the bridge and start talking and then realize that Kailie is not there with us. Jared and I run back over the bridge. I stay on top to look around from above and Jared goes down. She is nowhere to be seen. So we both go and start searching everywhere. It was so scary because there was soooo many people there and someone could snatch her so easily. Finally, about 10 minutes in to the search Jared finds her. A family had found her by the bridge and were taking her to the announcer stand. Talk about the SCARIEST 10 minutes of my life. All day she kept saying "I got lost mommy." She wasn't scared or crying because of course Kailie doesn't get scared of stuff like that. For family night this week with the Keck's we talked to the girls about what to do if they get lost and what their names are and what our names are. So scary, seriously hope I never have to do that again.
Fun day and a fun Memorial Weekend.
Great Job Daddy!

Gladiator Rock n Run 5K.

Last Saturday we did the Gladiator Rock n Run 5k which was actually a 7k. I was really nervous the weeks before but once I looked at all the 21 obstacles I felt better. Nitro from the American Gladiator show was the creator of this and was there. It was funny to see him.
We did a girls team first at 8:30 am and then the boys got to go at 10:00.
Here is Andrea, Me, Andrea Nelson and Molly Cragun getting ready to start.
I was not excited about the running part. I HATE running and have barely run since McKean was born which was a big mistake. I should have trained at least a little bit for this. I just assumed it would be less running and more obstacles but there was some long stretches of running. Turns out this is the longest I have ever run in my life and I was super sore the next day. Oops with all the mud and kiddos I totally spaced stretching.  Besides that, it was really fun. I liked all the obstacles. There were tunnels to go through and muddy pits to wade through. Dumpsters to climb in and out of. The best ones were the last few. The FREEZING Polar Bear plunge.

 The cargo net.

Which I almost flipped over on.
Justin caught this photo just perfectly. I almost dived right over it.

This last mud crawl was awesome. It had barbed wire lines going across. This is Stacie.

She got through barely getting dirty.

Then came the rest of us.
I just decided to lay down and get dirty. Way more fun that way!

Andrea was with me on the getting dirty part!

Stopping for a quick photo before facing the big wall. Molly and Stacie rocked it and went really fast. The rest of us took it a bit slower. Mostly because of me being so slow at running but we did still pass a ton of people.

Then came this big wall. There was no way to get over without the help of others. I was the first and there was tons of guys up there helping who I just thought were the race volunteers so I climbed down and walked around to watch Andrea and then realized that most of the guys had left.Oops so I climbed back up to help my team climb it.
Andrea Nelson making her way over.

Heather was the last one up and over.

Then it was on to the fiery obstacle to the finish.

All the girls. Left to Right: Molly Cragun, Me, Stacie Reeves, Holly Creer, Andrea Keck, Heather Widdison, Andrea Nelson, and Becky Jones.  All in all it was a blast! I am very glad that Andrea talked me into doing it. The guys had to start right when we finished so I had to hurry and get cleaned up to feed McKean and take care of them. That was definitely the hardest part of the day. Poor kid definitely had a muddy milk lunch that day!

The guys cruised through the course. Which was nice for us since it was getting hot. We did it in an hour and the guys did it in about 40 minutes.  The mud had started to dry up a little bit so they didn't get too dirty. Jared and Chad making their way. Chad did get stuck though. He is the one in the middle right with his black shorts stuck on the wire.
Austin came to the rescue and had to rip his shorts to get them free.
 Justin making his way through.
The guys: Justin Keck, Austin Nelson, Jared, Chad Cragun.

They had it way easy over the wall having these two guys lift them up and over.
Crossing the fire. I  love Jared in this one!
It  was an awesome day. We plan to do it again next year barring being pregnant.
These two cuties were so awesome all day. The drive home was long because of all the traffic. So we had fun taking silly photos and waving to their daddies who were in front of us sitting in the back of a truck!
